We all start up or run smaller businesses for a myriad of reasons. We have bright ideas, spot opportunities to make a difference, believe we can do it better than others, want to make a bigger impact, don’t like politics or simply want to be our own boss. We certainly didn’t do it for the seemingly unending and numbingly unproductive mountain of “stuff” to do that makes it such a slog.
So how do we escape that – and achieve what we set out to do?
The simple answer is “get help”. Not therapy. I mean real help. I meanOutsource.
If you have a need, many times it can be fulfilled by someone who is better and more cost effective than you or your staff. Sliced and diced in the size you require and to suit all budgets. You don’t even have to leave your office if the mountain has obscured the door.
When I started out offering a part-time Finance Director service in 2001 it was a rarity. Now you can acquire bite-size chunks of every key service that a business needs from IT, accounting, marketing, HR, legal, strategy, governance, risk management, R&D, sales, etc. Even the simple things like admin and telephone answering can many times be done better and cheaper by a VA (virtual assistance) service.
You don’t have to do it alone. And the expertise gets better and better (as long as you choose wisely!)
So how do you get help?
what do you do best? – you being the people already in your business.
what are your weaknesses? If you don’t know those, find someone who can help identify them. (We know people who can help in most disciplines.)
Once you know these,
how much time is your staff spending on “stuff” that they are not expert in? How valuable would it be if they focused on what makes a difference? Put a value on that.
That tells you how much more value that you can get from what you already have.
Find someone more efficient to do the rest.
I know it’s not that simple. But then again yes it is.
I run a small business of my own. In my time I have covered or been in every function of much larger businesses up to and including CEO and Chairman. I have identified, right now, that I need help with marketing – and I have an excellent marketing advisor. I know I need help with admin and book-keeping and again they are covered. In time, I will outsourcesales, contracts, HR, IT. And that’s just in the next 12 months.
Call me up and test me out. I like a challenge. I didn’t like the mountain that was blocking my doorway. And let’s face it, neither do you.
